Where were you born and raised? I was born in San Diego, California during a time when my mom and dad lived there on doctors orders. The doctors told dad that he needed to get out of Phoenix, Arizona due to a condition called Valley Fever. Shortly after I was born, my parents moved back to Phoenix where I was raised thru Jr. High School. We bounced around a bit after that. I spent most all my high school years in Colorado after we moved there from Arizona. I graduated with honors in music (and not much of anything else) at Fort Collins High School. After my high school years and some difficulties in our family, we move to Kirkland, Washington (Just Northeast of Seattle) where I met my wife and had our three children. We lived in the Northwest until we made the move to Maynardville, Tennessee where we now make our home in full time gospel music ministry.
Tell us about your family – I met my wife in college choir at our church in Kirkland, Washington. I was in a rehearsal when I met her and I haven’t got her off my mind since! Of course she was blown away by my good looks and great charm! We got married in our early twenties and had our first daughter (Breana Michele) just two years after being married. We had so much fun with Bre that we decided to have another. About two years after having Bre, Jackie (Jacquelyn Joyce) came into our life. After having two girls, we decided we had had enough fun and decided to leave it at two.
I was a self employed sub-contractor (flooring installer), Lisa was a full-time mom and we had no health insurance. We had saved up some money for me to go and have a procedure to insure that we would have no more children. After having saved up enough money for the procedure, we had an opportunity to go on vacation and visit family in New Mexico. We made the decision to use my vasectomy money to go on vacation instead…young and impulsive. While in New Mexico we conceived our third daughter (Valerie Beth)! God had another plan for our family and we are so blessed to have Val. She is the life of the party! Needless to say, we saved up again and short of a miracle we have stopped at three beautiful girls.
What are your favorite places To Eat on the road? Having grown up in Arizona, I developed a love for good Mexican food. I could eat Mexican every meal if I had the chance. I love it spicy!! When we go to a Mexican food restaurant, the very first thing I ask for is extra spicy salsa to have with my chips. After I get my food, I pour salsa all over it. I also love roasted Jalapenos! If my forehead isn’t sweatin’, it ‘aint hot enough!! As far as fast food, Subway would have to be my favorite.
What is one interesting talent you have that most people don’t know about? I have an incredible talent of exasperating my wife by allowing the garbage to get too full in the house and procrastinating on my honey-do list. In my travels however, I have come to learn that many more men share in this skill. I’m thinking of maybe putting together a men’s support group where men of all ages, nationalities, economic levels and careers can come together to share their experiences with this talent….wait…I gotta go empty the kitchen garbage…I’ll be back.
What are your interests and/or hobbies? I love anything to do with the creation of music. I love every element of making a song come to life. From the charting and tracking to the final mix and master…I love it all. I love the studio! I love to play golf. I love to play golf. I love to play golf! Did I mention that I love to play golf! I love anything to do with water sports and fishing. I love four wheeling even though I don’t own one. I love the Arts. I love eating pizza while watching a movie. I love taking off for a day in my Dodge truck with my wife and exploring the countryside where we live in East Tennessee (after dumping the garbage). I love watching my three girls have fun.
What is your personal testimony? I was raised in a very fundamental church and accepted Jesus as my Savior when I was 12 years old. As I entered my teen years, my mom and dad left the church for a period of four years. During that time my family went through a very rebellious time, almost causing the death of our family. God restored our family after we hit the bottom, humbled ourselves and repented. We got back into church and began the road back to making God the center of our lives and our home. It was at that time that I began understanding my relationship with God and the meaning of Lordship. Since that time I have been working out my Salvation and growing to make Him Lord in my life. It is a decision I must make on a daily basis that I live for Him and not myself. It’s then and only then that I experience all that God has for me. I am so thankful for God’s grace in our family’s life. He has blessed me beyond words. It is my hearts desire to continue to sing songs and tell stories of His great love until He comes or He takes me home to be with Him.
What is your musical history? – Ever since I can remember, I grew up loving music. When I was around ten years old, I used to make recordings on a tape recorder on my grandpa and grandma’s old cabinet radio/tape/record player. I would do that just about every time I went to spend the night at their house. When I got into Jr. High I sang in choir and played percussion in band. My band teacher let me take home the school drum set for a summer. I practiced and played all summer long and then joined the jazz band as the drummer the next year. When I got into high school, I joined every music course that was offered. If I would have studied other subjects as much as music, I might have become a brain surgeon or nuclear scientist! I was in concert band, concert orchestra, marching band, pep band, jazz band, concert chorale, madrigal choir and jazz choir. I was in all of these for all three years of High School. In my junior year, I was selected as the Drum Major of the marching band and stayed on as Drum Major for my senior year as well. I was also selected as the assistant director for the pep band and marching band and was assistant director for concert chorale as well. I tried out and made All State Choir all three years and was under the instruction of some incredible guest conductors one of which was John Rutter. I sang his works “Gloria” and “Requiem” with a three hundred voice choir and orchestra in a packed out Macky auditorium at the University of Colorado after a three day workshop under his conducting. I was only sixteen years old. This lit my music fire even more as it was a music highlight for me. After graduating I moved to the Seattle area with my family and joined a mega church in Kirkland, Washington. I jumped head long into the music department at Overlake Christian Church and started playing percussion in the orchestra and singing lead in many of the musicals put on by the church. I also sang in a contemporary Christian music group formed by the church named “Starwind”. They sang many songs that would remind you of the group “Truth”. I became an assistant to the Music Pastor of the church and started directing the Jr. and Sr. High School choirs. I did a US and European tour in the summer of 1984 with the “Continental Singers”. In 1987 we formed “Crist Family Singers” which is known today as “The Crist Family”. Today I am using all I learned over the years to write, arrange, direct, produce and perform music for “The Crist Family”. Music has been my life since those days around grandpa and grandma’s tape recorder. I’m so thankful for all that God has allowed me to do in the area of music.

Zane HankeyDear Crist Family,
Your music has allowed me to understand that God is there for you no matter what. i have been to three of your concerts and every time i go i gain even more faith in god. i lost my Great grandma on February 11 2011, and then on May 5 2011 i lost my Great grandad. many people laugh at me because i am sad about losing them but i know that god will take care of them. the devil can fill your mind with many thoughts and has done to me but i know no matter what the cause God is my savior and i believe in him and Jesus.i am a 12 year old boy out of Petrolia PA. the impact of your music on me was incredible. your music was so strong that it filled a gigantic hole in my heart as it taught me never ever give up on God or Jesus. And from your family teaching me i know they are in a better place. there have been times that i have lost belief but you taught me that God will be there for you. Your music is so amazing and i love it. Many times i am down or depressed i open one of your cds and listen to them and it allows me to raise my spirits. Heaven is a wonderful place im sure it and we all are gonna get there some day. i want to officially thank you for giving me faith in God that i never had before. if you get this please send a message back and remember i love you all be safe traveling and continue to bless peoples hearts as you have blessed mine.

Rich CristHi Zane,
But I feel the way you feel many times. The devil can lie to us and tell us that things look hopeless and cause us to despair, but he is a liar!!! Greater is He (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) that is in us than he that is in the world. I have been reminded this week that God loves me and has an incredible plan for my life no matter what the enemy might try and tell me. And yes, God loves YOU more than anything in the world and will ALWAYS be with you when you suffer loss like you did earlier this year. Remember God’s word when it says that NOTHING can separate you from the love of God. You are a special young man. Let’s you and I agree together to keep our heads up and live in victory and joy because God loves us and has a plan for our lives. Have an awesome day Zane!
I have read this post several times and each time I read it, it becomes even more dear to me. I guess you and I are not all that different…except that you are 12 and I am 48!!

Hi! Thanks for understanding my predicament. i started school the 30th of August. Dave WeigandHi Crist family, my e-mail changed and I lost touch for a while. Went to hear that Booth Brothers last night. What an incredible concert, I couldn’t believe how many people from canyon hills were there. It was like old home week. I think about you often and ask the Lord’s special blessing on you. Even though it’s old news I was sorry to hear about Gail and Tom, what a blessing they are. And what a great testimony. Often I’m overwhelmed at the pain we have caused in order to have our testimonies. My prayer is that I’ll get back to the quartet convention soon and that all have the privilege of listening to your great music. Thanks for your awsome rich memories.
Dave

Michael Whitman (Spike)Hey Rich,,, hope all of you are having one tremendous July 4th holiday ! i’ve got a honey-do list a yard long, and a million other things “I” want to do yet today, but in taking a break, you see where my heart is ~ in looking at the schedule, your family is on the road already, with a July 4th date tonight. maybe not the most savory of dates to perform…. but not too far to go, and when you think of it, your family is not performing, but getting the opportunity once again to minister to God’s children in song. singing for the glory of God,,, praising Him for the chance to touch someone with your family’s special gifts. yes, tough, but when one considers the upside, “priceless!”
anyway, once again we really enjoyed “the Crist Family” performance in Archbold a few weeks ago. NOBODY can touch your harmonies ! Nobody can touch your family’s warmth and natural charisma ! AND, your hands-down gifts and abilities! you guys are just ‘Special’ and hats off to the sideline work your family puts together, to get to, and maintain, your present level of accomplishments ! YES, LOL ! your singing is great ! sometimes i marvel at just what a tremendous impact your family has made with my wife and me, and over such a short period of time, to boot. from last November on the cruise, and within the following 3 or 4 months, we flat-out got HOOKED ! in such a sweet, yet tremendous way ~ with all the possible gospel groups that one could be become attached to, i feel so blessed that the Lord brought you guys to us, on such a spiritual platter. Arent blessings wonderful !
Ok, enough “Yak, Yak, Yak !” some things i wanted to touch on: first, your ‘a cappella’ singing is simply the best in the business. not that we’re comparing, but there is No Way your family can be equalled in this department ! in your Archbold, Ohio performance, you were well into the song without the backup, before i even realized there was no music. i even had to whisper to my wife and ask her! the sound you generated was so pure and rich, it was like the Lord Himself opened up heaven, and sent His personal choir of angels to touch our hearts. i mean, Really ! i’m thinking this is something that cant be overlooked as still another avenue to pursue a bit more, in the future. certainly the normal accompanying music has to be your staple, but,,,, a cappella style really needs to be in your regular repertoire ~ it was just soooo beautiful ~ every show, every CD, needs some of this added to it. your handle should be revised to read, The Crist A Cappella Family” well, no, lol, thats being goofy ! but you get the picture!
also, we would really enjoy bringing your family to our own little church sometime to share you and your God-given talents with our congregation. am thinking the best draw is on a sunday morning during the school year, but it would have to be a sunday that fits your saturday night schedule/travel time/budget needs and allowances.
well, better get back to work. Rich, give my regards to all. May God continue to bless your family, both as a group, and individually as well. you have my prayers for your safety, and continued success !
Your friend and fan, in Christ,
Spike

Rich CristSpike,
You continue to be an incredible encouragement to our ministry. There are so many times when we ask…”does any of this make since”? Then we get a comment like this one and realize once again that what we are doing makes a difference. Thank you for your love, support, soup and kind words.
Love ya!!

Dennis RushHeh Crist Family. I pray that all is well. Your music continues to bless me. I’m working on a series of messages about life not making sense. We’ve had so many tragedies in the area. Jackie’s song “My Heart Knows” lends itself so well to the series. I still remember when I first heard that song. You were there for our homecoming in Selma. When we struggle with unbelief, my heart still knows Jesus loves me. That song, as all of your songs, continues to encourage and edify me. May God continue to bless your ministry.

Lloyd HohnHaving stopped our ministry in music (but not any other kind of ministry) this year due to vocal issues, Linda and I have been visiting local churches just to see what is going on in the body of Christ here in Bismarck, ND. This past Sunday we decided to visit E-Free once again, mainly because your ministry team would be singing. What blessed my wife and me so very much was the fact that we heard the name of Jesus lifted up and praised BY NAME more in the first five songs of your concert than we have heard in all of our visits to churches and hearing their “praise bands” singing generic worship! I am very concerned that what we now have being presented as “praise and worship” is so general in nature that it could pass for “worship” in most any other religious environment. We are not generic “God-tians” we are “CHRIST-ians”, followers of Jesus Christ. (ok, that is my rant for today on this topic!)
During your ministry I contemplated how I could adequately describe the team’s ministry, if asked to do so in one word. Immediately the word, “substance” came into my spirit. There is substance to your ministry and that is lifting up the name of Jesus. Yes, your team is very good. The vocal blend of family is awesome. As with the other groups that have been through Bismarck, you are professional. But, I felt you did not do a “show”, but your emphasis was ministry first along with all the shine and polish of a professional group. There is such as thing as excellence in ministry, where you work hard to do things in a manner that reflect the aspects of the Kingdom of our Lord.
Now, I don’t know a things about your individual lives, but collectively, there is an anointing upon this team. Sometimes it is hard to understand how the Lord would or could use us for His purposes when we KNOW the struggles we face individually, but this is but one of the awesome things of our God. We are all a part of His grand plan in bringing people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. In your ministry team you have the twin towers for supporting the success that comes your way. Availability and capability! Available for the use of the Kingdom and capability to perform that which He is asking you to do. Avoid the tendency in ministry, where the business side overtakes the ministry side. Yes, we have to make and meet budget (betcha have a spreadsheet by someone in the group for THAT – not mentioning any names here) because if we can’t pay bills, we can’t be doing what we’re doing. But above it all is the umbrella of ministry. We felt that this past Sunday morning and it blessed us so that we talked about it throughout the day Sunday and this morning I thought I would take a minute to write and express our blessing!
Time brings change. Linda and I understand it and have accepted it for our lives. May you all continue to embrace the leading of the Lord for all the changes that come your way! Remember the word I feel the Lord gave me to describe your ministry, “substance”! You will continue to have this as you get your daily sustenance from His table.
Don’t be surprised if Linda drops you a line as well with her thoughts.

Ken TillerRich,
My family and I attended two of your shows at Dollywood this week. Your family did a great job of demonstrating the joy of being a Christian. We found the music at these two shows to be excellent however, I believe the best part was your brief testimony of how the Lord restored your family after years of difficulty. May God continue to bless you and your family as you serve him.
Regards,
Ken

Thanks for taking the time to comment. It’s encouraging to hear that the message was clear about God’s love and grace and it helps us to know we are right where God wants us to be. I hope we will be able to meet you somewhere down the road again.
Thanks again for writing.

Clay & Sybil LawrenceRich: We so enjoyed the recent SInging At Sea cruise with you. On our way home we listened to the Christmas CD you gave us. We listened to it twice and each time it brought tears of joy to our eyes. This is the best work you have done so far. We pray it will become a classic on both secular and Christian radio outlets. The arrangements were outstanding. The harmony and cohesiveness of the singing was amazing. The enunciation and intonation was right on. This is an example of quality music. Keep up the good work.
God Bless you and your family,
Clay and Sybil Lawrence
